Soraya
The Stoning of an Inconvenient Wife
oil / mix media on canvas
Soraya was stoned to death by a system of law that maintains that if a man is accused of infidelity by his wife, she must prove his guilt, but if a woman is accused, she must prove her innocence. I watched the film The Stoning of Soraya M. depicting injustice and murder that occurs under sharia law. I felt compelled to paint her as I imagined her. I encourage all viewing this painting to watch the movie or read the book. This continues in Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria and anywhere that sharia is the law of the land. Why care, because as long as men are allowed to disfigure, abase, or kill women without punishment, no woman is safe…anywhere.
