Her name means ‘of the earth.’ She is a fragment of what she could have been. The historical trauma suffered by her people whose lands were taken by white settlers, relocated to reservations and the cultural devastation of the children taken from their parents and forced to attend white-run boarding schools have damaged and emotionally crippled the remaining survivors of this American Holocaust. The tragic history of the First Nation People has never been taught in school. The oppressors were made into heroes and celebrated in national holidays.
