Shelby
I Represent Myself
acrylic / glass on canvas
Shelby was a true individual. She had no desire to represent anything other than herself. A student in one of my classes, so unlike everyone else who stayed in one fixed place or huddled together in a grouping of similarities. She moved through the room with a curious nature, intent on knowing everyone. The college would time and again ask her to speak on behalf of her race, to comment on reasons and solutions. Shelby refused to speak for anyone but herself.
